Hopefully you had a chance to take some time off over the festive season. To recharge and refresh and think about the key principles that guide your life.
If, like so many of us, you are in a Covid lockdown of sorts, taking time to reset and refresh is even more important for your mental and physical health.
Resetting and refreshing on an annual basis makes sense, but I do know some people that will refresh more often if they can.
I always take some time (usually between Christmas and New Year) to consider the year just gone and think about the year come and reflect on whether I’m still living according to a single principle.
There is no great mystery to what I do: I simply review past performance and reflect on what that might mean for future performance, whilst also considering what I can learn from the past: doing more of what works and less of what doesn’t work.
For me however, the single principle that I follow are also the framework for my annual ‘review’ is this: the only thing within my control is my attitude. Or as Epictetus put it “It is not what happens to you, but how you react that matters.” My attitude is the only thing really within my control. So I have to ensure that it is as positive as it can be and focused on being proactive and useful.
So have I always approached each situation positively (even the tough ones) and were my values of empathy or compassion, respect, balance, purpose, family, commitment, forgiveness and change easily observed?
I don’t get it right all the time – I’m only human after all. But by taking a little time to remind myself of these things, I hope I am being a better person and a better consultant each day.
